Sue's
Corner

If
you’ve been wishing you could join in on the fun of playing music with
others but have been afraid to try, Fred and I would like to encourage you
to grab your instrument and come on over to the Slow Jam at the Texas
Pickin’ Park at 1pm on Sat, April 10th.
Everyone
at the Slow Jam knows what it feels like to want to play but to be afraid
of making mistakes in front of other people.
At the Texas Pickin’ Park you will find yourself among very
welcoming and friendly musicians who are also learning to play in a group
and who will be happy to have you join us.

Maybe you’ve been thinking you need to play perfectly without
mistakes in order not to be nervous. But
if you start participating in the Slow Jams you’ll soon find that it’s
actually learning how to recover from a mistake and be able to get back on
track in a song that relieves your nervousness.
The way to learn how to recover from mistakes is through regular
jamming. Did you ever hear the
saying, “Good judgment comes from experience.
Experience comes from bad judgment”?
Well, the same is pretty much true with music.
Good playing comes from experience…and musical experience comes
from jamming where you’re inevitably going to do some amount of bad
playing. But it’s okay
because we all know that’s the necessary path every musician has to go
down in order to learn and no one is going to think badly of you because
of it. We’ve all been there.
One of the best pickers I know tells me that he still never fully
learns a tune until he’s crashed and burned with it in a jam.
We can all do our best to learn a song at home but it’s often
only when we are out playing that tune in a group with a constant rhythm
that doesn’t slow down during the hard parts that we find all those
“gotcha” spots that we need to go back and work on.
Playing with others is a big help and it’s lots of fun once you
get over being so self-conscious.
So if you’d like to give it a try, please come on over to the Pickin’
Park Slow Jam and we’ll be glad to see you.
It’s free and it’s fun and you can meet some really nice
friends to play with.
C’mon. Let’s pick!
